A jury on Wednesday awarded an ex-Waco police deputy more than $10 million in damages for sexual and racial assault claims. The jury also awarded attorney Charles Meade $9 million in punitive damages to settle a civil lawsuit filed in 2014.

A jury in April awarded the former deputy, Tom Bosenko, more than $10 million in damages after a jury found him negligent in a case he investigated and brought to trial, documents filed with the state show.

The state attorney general's office argued that a jury could reasonably have reached its decision after considering other aggravating factors that were not taken into account during the trial.

Bosenko did not testify in his own defense.

In 2012, three jury instructions said Bosenko should not have testified by making statements or telling evidence, according to court documents filed by Meade.

Meade said, "I can't believe that I'm being forced to represent this guy," after the jury decided in 2011 in a $1.5 million verdict that Bosenko had violated Bosenko's civil rights.

Meade was forced to settle a lawsuit with the ex-officer before a verdict in the case was reached.

More than 100 former Waco police officers who testified at the trial filed more than 70 motions in July 2014 to reduce or dismiss claims, arguing their careers could have been ruined if Bosenko had been found not guilty and that Bosenko was entitled to their attorneys fees as a result of the wrongful conviction.

The state's civil rights division argued that it does not have the jurisdiction to determine that the jury's award was unreasonable. The state said that if Meade believes the jurors, then he has standing to argue in court that the jury's award was unreasonable and he should receive the award, Meade's attorney said during his closing argument Wednesday.

The proposed legislation would see fishermen and landowners set the length of time that they can harvest reef fish and set limits for the number and type of shark fins that can be traded between fisheries.

The Government's proposal would see the amount of quota a fishing operation can buy rise to the equivalent of 25kg of shark fin.

"In a multi-billion-dollar industry such as the fishing industry, where profits have been at the heart of decision-making, the importance of these fishing opportunities and the importance of a consistent and consistent, open and transparent system of regulations would also be undermined," the report said.

"The Government is promoting legislation that aims to restrict the supply of fish and other marine products while taking away from conservation efforts a critical component of Australia's conservation legacy," said ACF managing director John Taylor.
